Albania Urged to Toughen Anti-Corruption Fight

The OSCE head in Albania on Wednesday urged Albania’s Chief Prosecutor, Adriatik Llala, to redouble the fight against organized crime and corruption.“The fight against organized crime, including trans-border crime and corruption, is the key to ensuring stability in the country, the region and at the global level,” Ambassador Eugen Wollfarth said in a meeting with Llalla.

“Delivering well-reasoned, appropriate verdicts in corruption cases involving senior officials would be a positive measure to demonstrate political resolve and restore public confidence in the judiciary,” he added.

According to Transparency International’s “Corruption Perception Index,” Albania is one of the most corrupt countries in Europe.

The Berlin-based watchdog organisation saw Albania plunge in its rankings from 95th place out of 176 countries in 2011 to 113th position in 2012.
