Former Turkish president charged for taking part in 1997 coup

Former Turkish President Suleyman Demirel has been charged with participating in a military coup that took place on February 28, 1997.

The charges against Demirel were brought through the Criminal Court of Erzurum province.

A number of high ranking Turkish military including Generals Cevik Bir, Erol Ozkasnak and others have already been imprisoned over this case.

The coup in 1997 was the fourth in the history of the country, after the events of 1960, 1971 and 1980. It was called ‘postmodern’. As a result of the coup, the ruling administration resigned and Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan retired.
