Merkel says NATO-Russia agreements remain unchanged

As the Nato summit is set to kick off in Wales tomorrow, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed that the Nato-Russian military agreements will remain unchanged, curbing any rising fears between Russia and Nato due to the Ukrainian crisis.

In a press statement on Wednesday, Merkel said “the Nato-Russian Military agreements will be intact.”

However, she reassured the Baltics (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) which have been anxious about Russia’s aggression in Ukraine that the Nato will have a stepped-up response to Russia.

Nato-Russian relations started in 1991 where many pacts were signed between the NATO military and Russia.

In 2002, the Russia-NATO council was created to handle security issues and joint projects. Cooperation between Russia and NATO now develops in several main sectors: fighting terrorism, military cooperation, cooperation on Afghanistan, industrial cooperation, non-proliferation, and others.
