Malian Islamist appears on the ICC on the destruction of Timbuktu

A suspected Islamist militant al-Qaida accused of ordering the destruction of precious monuments in the legendary city of Timbuktu in Mali appeared for the first time on Wednesday before the judges of the International Criminal Court.
Ahmad al-Mahdi al-Faqi was a first hearing in court based in The Hague, in the first case to be engaged by the ICC on the extremist violence that rocked Mali in 2012 and 2013.
