The mediators are trying to revive the Burundi crisis talks

Nairobi – the Minister of Defence of Uganda in Burundi is the latest attempt to revive peace talks between rival factions in the poor countries of Central Africa, presidential officials said Thursday.
Burundi has been shaken by violence linked to the successful bid but challenged President Pierre Nkurunziza for a third term.
Opponents said his reelection violated the terms of a peace agreement that paved the way to end a civil war 13 years in 2006.
Regional heads of state appointed Uganda in July to lead efforts to end months of restlessness, but attempts to negotiate an agreement have made little progress.
Ugandan Defence Minister Crispus Kiyonga arrived in Burundi’s capital Bujumbura Wednesday, presidential communications manager of Burundi Nyamitwe Willy said.
‘It will not be easy’
“He met with the presidents of the Senate and the National Assembly,” he added.
Several cycle previous negotiations, mediated by the United Nations, failed to resolve the political crisis in Burundi.
“It will not be easy,” a diplomat in Bujumbura said, asking not to be named. “The mediator arrived with the delicate task of reviving the talks .. trying to convince the government to sit at the same table with the opposition.”
Tensions are high. Richard Sezibera, Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC), the five-nation regional bloc, was “unceremoniously pushed” by a guard as he went into the Senate, another diplomat.
