Sisi meets Chief EU foreign policy emphasizes effective partnership

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi met with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini in Cairo on Tuesday, the State held MENA.
According to the spokesman of the Presidency Alaa Youssef, Mogherini said that his visit aims at strengthening the Egyptian-European relations through constructive dialogue between Egypt and the EU institutions.
Mogherini said his two-day visit to Cairo is an opportunity to exchange views on issues of common interest at the regional level, by selecting the key regional role of Egypt and its tireless efforts to resolve regional problems helps ensure the security and stability in the region.
Foreign minister of Egypt Sameh Shoukry and the head of the EU Delegation to Egypt James Moran attended the meeting.
The head of the EU’s foreign policy commended Egypt for a seat on the UN Security Council in 2016-2017, and expressed his anticipation of continued coordination on different issues in the Council .
El-Sisi said that Egypt is committed to providing EU officials for information on regional developments while clarifying the vision of Egypt towards them, including the most significant disadvantages not only for witnesses countries conflict, but also for their neighbors.
According to the Egyptian presidency, talks about the Libyan crisis represented a significant portion of the meeting where Mogherini thanked El-Sisi for Egypt’s efforts in achieving stability in Libya, especially in communication with parties to the conflict and encourage them to set up a “national unity” government.
El-Sisi stressed the importance of supporting the national army of Libya by the lifting of the arms embargo imposed helping the army providing security, order and the fight against terrorism in Libya.
Mogherini was a supporter of Egypt’s efforts to fight against Sinai-based Islamist militants since it took office in November last year, but has also been a vocal critic of massive death sentences distributed to the Islamists in criminal cases, including the case of ousted President Mohamed Morsi.
She described the penalties and legal proceedings as “contrary to the obligations of Egypt under international law” after the death sentence was confirmed Morsi pending appeal in June in a lawsuit related to a prison break and murder of officers of the prison during the 18-day uprising that toppled autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
