Yaounde – At least six civilians were killed and over 30 injured Wednesday in a double suicide in the region of the northern border of Cameroon with Nigeria, which is regularly attacked by Boko Haram fighters, according to security sources.
The assailants, who were also killed, were both women, one source said.
“Six civilians were killed and two suicide bombers who blew up” during a vigil in the village of Nguetchewe, a source told AFP, adding that 30-50 people were injured.
“The villagers were gathered for later when two suicide bombers joined them, posing for family members,” said the source.
The two women suicide bombers “were detonated at 06:20, just as people who had spent the night there were preparing for a meal.”
A police source in the area said several children, including a boy aged six and 15 years, were among the victims. At least one member of a local committee set up in response to the upsurge of Islamic attacks was also killed.
The most seriously injured were evacuated to a regional hospital in Maroua.
It was the fifth suicide attack in the region of the Far North of Cameroon since the beginning of the year. On January 18 four people were killed in an attack on the mosque Nguetchewe.
About 1 200 people have been killed since Nigerian Islamists began attacks in neighboring Cameroon in 2013 staging, according to government figures.
