Egypt’s President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi met Saturday with Libya’s UN-backed Presidential Council Chairperson Fayez Seraj, to discuss counter-terrorism efforts and the situation of Egyptian expatriates in the restive country, according to a statement from the Egyptian Presidential Office.
Both sides have tackled the latest developments on the situation in Libya and the efforts exerted for reaching reconciliation by giving the Libyan government the parliament’s confidence as soon as possible to put an end to the political turmoil and eradicate the Islamic State, the statement added.
President Sisi also tackled the situation of Egyptian expatriates in Libya, noting that the safety of the Egyptian people boils down to the security and safety in the country, the statement continued.
A state of chaos has prevailed in the oil-rich country since the former Libyan President Muammar al-Gaddafi was ousted in 2011. Islamists are controlling the northern parts of the country while the internationally recognized government is located in Tobruk city on Libya’s eastern Mediterranean coast.
