Minister of Interior and Local Authorities Noureddine Bedoui called, on Thursday in Bamako, to mobilize all capacities to combat terrorist groups and eradicate criminal organizations, which are threatening security in the region.

“We have to mobilize all our capacities to combat terrorist groups and eradicate criminal organizations, which are threatening the security of the region,” Bedoui said in his opening address at the 12th session of Algeria-Mali Border Committee, which he co-chaired with his Malian counterpart Abdoulaye Idrissa Maiga.

The minister hailed the quality of bilateral and regional cooperation between the two countries, particularly within the Fusion and Liaison Unit (UFL) and the Joint Military Staff Committee (CEMOC).

Bedoui underlined that acts of terrorism, illegal immigration, drug trafficking, smuggling and trafficking in human beings constitute threats to the security of borders, impede movement of persons and goods and paralyze the economy of the region.”

“Terrorist groups and criminal organizations are taking advantage of the absence of institutions, openness of borders and the unsettled lifestyle of their populations to influence them by extremist ideologies,” explained the minister.

He said that strengthening border security “should not be the only option to eradicate terrorism,” adding “poverty, exclusion and marginalization are also factors feeding terrorism and other forms of crime.”

Bedoui stressed the need for the two countries to step up efforts to fight against poverty and underdevelopment, especially in joint border regions, which is a complex challenge.
