Third UN peacekeeper killed by attackers in CAR

A UN peacekeeper from Bangladesh was fatally shot by attackers in Central African Republic, UN spokesman Stephan Dujarric said Friday.
The peacekeepers of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) on patrol were returning from the town of Koui in the Ouham-Pende Prefecture when they were attacked by some 50 assailants, Dujarric told a regular briefing here.
The peacekeeper was killed on Thursday, said the mission, noting that the attack brings the number of MINUSCA peacekeepers killed in the line of duty to three since the beginning of 2017. Earlier this week, two Moroccan MINUSCA peacekeepers were killed in an attack near the town of Obo in southeastern CAR.
“We express our sincere condolences to the people and the Government of Bangladesh. The Secretary-General will be writing a letter to the Government of Bangladesh to express his own condolences,” Dujarric said.
Despite significant progress and successful elections, CAR has remained in the grip of instability and sporadic unrest.
