Tunisia has welcomed the agreement on a total ceasefire in Syria, which entered into force on Thursday, and called on all parties to the conflict to respect it in order to allow humanitarian aid to the victims of the Syrian conflict.
Tunisia has expressed the wish to see this agreement lead to a global solution that will put an end to the suffering of the Syrian people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Friday.
Tunisia recalled the “unshakable position of principle” adopted since the beginning of the Syrian conflict and which calls for dialogue and negotiation, the only way to achieve a political solution.
It also welcomed the willingness of the parties to the conflict to enter into negotiations.
Tunisia has called on the international community to step up efforts to support the ceasefire agreement and to create the conditions for successful negotiations so as to promote the return of peace to Syria and stability in the region.
The headquarters of the Syrian armed forces had announced a halt to fighting throughout the country from Thursday at midnight.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday confirmed a ceasefire deal between Damascus and the rebels at midnight before the opening of peace talks.
