OPEC Fund Proposed
TEHRAN, April 19–President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday emphasized that despite the hike in oil prices in recent years, the real price has not been achieved and urged oil exporters to reduce the pressure of price hike on weak countries.
Addressing the second meeting of cabinet members with governors general at the Interior Ministry, the chief executive added that the price of products produced from crude oil is many times more than the oil price and advanced countries benefit the most from this value added.
“The rise in oil prices puts weak and poor countries under pressure. For preventing this, ministers of oil and economy have been asked to present Iran’s proposal to oil producing countries and to follow up on it,“ he said.
Elaborating further, Ahmadinejad said, “Oil producing countries, especially members of Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), can set a certain output level and supply oil at a more suitable price to weaker and poorer consumers. Our proposal is that a fund be established so that oil exporting countries would deposit a portion of their excess revenues earned from price hikes and curb the pressure on weak countries.“
The president underlined that the global oil price must be determined on the basis of supply and demand mechanism.
“Oil is the precious asset of the oil producing countries and its price should not be lowered under the pretext of supporting weak countries, because this only benefits the powerful countries. At the same time, we do not want to exert unwanted pressure on weak countries and poor nations. In the past 27 years, although our country constantly faced pressures, we always helped needy nations,“ he said.
Ahmadinejad lambasted the interference of foreigners in the internal affairs of regional countries and said this will spread insecurity.
“By occupying other countries and harming the security and calm of different nations, foreigners impose restrictions on the governments of these countries. As a result, the people of these countries will not find the opportunity to determine their own fate while the security of these countries will also be encroached upon and their people cannot meet their everyday demands and needs,“ he said.
Ahmadinejad also called on all people and political parties of the country to report any misconduct by a state manager to related officials.
