Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Ali Aboul Gheit are likely to meet each other on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York this week, a senior Egyptian official said Saturday. The Egyptian diplomat who asked to remain anonymous told FNA that the two top diplomats are expected to discuss the latest developments in the two countries’ relations under the present positive atmosphere dominating the two sides’ contacts.
Earlier the Egyptian foreign minister denied any such meeting with his Iranian counterpart on the sidelines of the UN assembly meeting in New York.
Asked about the contents of a recent meeting between the Iranian and Egyptian deputy foreign ministers, the source said, “During this meeting, the two sides raised new words and discussed certain issues in relation to security cooperation between Tehran and Cairo.”
“Cairo is prepared to remove the obstacles in the way of the resumption of its ties with Tehran,” he underlined, adding, “Tehran has also provided a positive response to certain requests of Cairo and it has accepted to change the name of Khaled Islamboli Street to Intifada.”
The street which was named after Egyptian Major Khaled Islamboli who assassinated former Egyptian president Anvar Sadat in the 80s, has always been an impediment to the resumption of ties between Tehran and Cairo.
Iranian deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, heading a political delegation, paid a visit to Cairo last Tuesday and met with several high-ranking officials of that country to discuss resumption of Tehran-Cairo bilateral relations.
Following the two-day talks between the Iranian and Egyptian officials, the two sides agreed to promote talks to the level of ministers and to form a committee to remove the impediments to the two states’ mutual cooperation.
