Undersecretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said Tehran would introduce in next two days the person who should replace Ali Larijani in the Islamic Republic’s nuclear negotiations with the EU. “The (Iran-EU) talks will be held on Tuesday and the person who should attend these negotiations will be named very soon,” Fazli said.
Earlier on Saturday Iranian Government Spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham said that Tehran’s chief nuclear negotiator and SNSC Secretary Ali Larijani has resigned from his post.
“Mr. Larijani had personal problems and was willing to work in other political and management areas,” Elham said, adding that the top nuclear negotiator had several times asked President Ahmadinejad to accept his resignation.
The spokesman said that Larijani would be replaced by Iranian deputy foreign minister for European and American affairs Saeed Jalili.
He said it has not yet been decided who would attend the nuclear talks with the European Union on Tuesday.
“It is possible that Mr. Jalili or Mr. Larijani and Mr. Jalili together attend the talks,” Elham said, adding, “What matters is continued negotiations and pursuing the line of the Islamic Republic’s policies.
Elham underlined that Larijani’s replacement did not mean a change in Iran’s plans and policies.
“Iran’s policies will remain in place irrespective of the form and the person who will represent Iran in negotiations,” he stressed.
