King Abdullah , Abbas discuss Mideast

A011771414.jpgHis Majesty King Abdullah and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday discussed efforts to ensure the success of the US-hosted international peace meeting to take place before the end of this year.King Abdullah and Abbas reiterated that the gathering, proposed by US President George W. Bush, should address focal issues in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that could lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

The two leaders also emphasised the importance of preparing well for the meeting, stressing the need to have a specific agenda for final status negotiations to ensure the success of the peace process and to discuss issues relating to Jerusalem, the borders and refugees.

The Monarch renewed Jordan’s support for the Palestinian leader and the country’s keenness to rally Arab and international support for the Palestinian Authority to help it succeed in its negotiations with the Israelis.

The King and Abbas reviewed the outcome of a four-day visit by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to the region.

His Majesty met with Rice during his private visit to London on October 18.

The Palestinian president briefed King Abdullah on his talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Abbas also voiced his appreciation for the Kingdom’s role in supporting the Palestinians.

In press statements following the meeting, Abbas said he briefed King Abdullah on his visit to Asian countries including Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei, which might be invited to attend the upcoming meeting.

Abbas said King Abdullah pledged to coordinate with these countries to rally support for the Palestinian cause.

Asked about relations with Hamas, Abbas said that if Hamas goes back on its coup against the Palestinian Authority, the doors will be reopened for a dialogue and cooperation.
