Queens soldier killed by roadside bomb in Afghanistan

NEW YORK – The Defense Department is announcing that a 34-year-old soldier from Queens has been killed by a roadside bomb while on duty in Afghanistan.

Maj. Jeffrey R. Calero died Oct. 29 in Kajaki, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an explosive detonated while he was on dismounted patrol, the military said.

Calero was from Queens Village. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group, of the Massachusetts National Guard, based in Springfield, Mass.
