Cyprus president urges peaceful solution to Cyprus issue in Athens

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias expressed disappointment on Thursday at the first signals sent by the newly-elected leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Dervis Eroglu, stressing that he still wants a peaceful solution to the Cyprus issue as soon as possible.

“I want a speedy solution to the Cyprus problem, but I have a great patience to hear the ideas of the new leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community,” Christofias said while addressing the 14th Roundtable with the Greek government organized by The Economist in Athens.

Christofias stressed that Eroglu’s statements on two peoples and two states in Cyprus contradict the UN resolutions on one bi- zonal, bi-communal federation. He also alleged that the negotiations with Eroglu’s predecessor, Mehmet Ali Talat, did not continue due to Ankara’s intervention.

Christofias called on Turkey to change stance and prove with actions that it also seeks a fair solution to the Cyprus issue that will be in the benefit of all parties.
