Gambian, Iranian presidents stress expansion of ties

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Gambian counterpart, President Yahya Jammeh, here on Saturday called for further expansion of ties between the two states.

During a meeting held after the official welcoming ceremony for the Gambian president, the Iranian president pointed to the amicable ties enjoyed by the two countries in various areas.

He said there were no restrictions to expansion of Iran-Gambia cooperation, and noted that exchange visits between the two countries’ officials contribute to expansion of bilateral ties.

He expressed hope the current visit to Tehran of the Gambian president would further boost relations between the two countries.

For his part, President Jammeh said the main objective of his current visit to Tehran was to raise the two countries’ level of cooperation.

Referring to current ties as “the highest” between his country and other states, he expressed the hope that his visit will lead to further expansion of Tehran-Banjul relations.

The Gambian president, heading a senior politico-economic delegation, arrived here this morning for a two-day official visit.

He was officially welcomed by President Ahmadinejad at a ceremony held at the Presidential Office this morning.

Jammeh’s visit to Iran is taking place in response to a visit by President Ahmadinejad to Gambia in late June.

Gambia has a population of 1.2 million people, 90 percent of which is Muslim.
