Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, heading a high-ranking delegation, is scheduled to leave Tehran for Algeria on Monday. During his two-day trip which will take place at the invitation of Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Ahmadinejad is due to meet his Algerian counterpart to discuss the two countries’ economic, cultural, social and political ties and exchange views about the important issues of the world of Islam.
Political analysts view Ahmadinejad’s visit to Algeria as a significant step in the promotion of the two countries’ relations which underwent a cumbersome era following the security crisis of the 90s.
Iran and Algeria resumed diplomatic ties in 2000, and the last visit to that country by an Iranian president took place at the time of the former president, Seyed Mohammad Khatami.
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki paid a visit to Algeria last June and discussed bilateral ties and other issues of mutual interest during his meetings with the officials of that country.
In his two-day sojourn, Mottaki attended meetings with Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Prime Minister Abdelaziz Belkhadem and Foreign Minister Mohammad Bajavi.
