Sri Lanka Stresses Expansion of Ties with Iran

Sri Lankan ambassador to Tehran called for the development of economic ties between his country and Iran. The Sri Lankan envoy made the remarks in a meeting with Iranian Parliament Speaker Gholam Ali Haddad Adel here on Wednesday.

During the meeting, the Iranian speaker noted the two countries’ cordial and stable relations, and predicted a promising prospect for Iran-Sri Lanka relations in future, given the two states’ potentials and possibilities.

He further voiced pleasure in the two countries’ cooperation and coordination in international bodies and circles, and praised Sri Lanka for its positive vote and support for Iran in relation to human rights issues.

Haddad Adel also expressed the hope that the two countries’ mutual cooperation in international bodies would increase in future.

Elsewhere, he noted Sri Lanka’s role in the formation of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Asian Parliaments Assembly (APA), and called on Asian countries to make serious efforts to form the APA.

Haddad Adel described APA as a center for cooperation and friendship among Asian states, which would help resolve their inter-state problems.

For his part, the Sri Lankan envoy underlined his country’s enthusiasm for expanding friendly ties with Tehran in all the different areas, specially in parliamentary grounds, and pointed out that consolidation of parliamentary relations between the two countries would pave the way for the promotion and deepening of Iran-Sri Lanka relations in other areas.

He further praised Iran’s initiative for the establishment of the Asian Parliaments Assembly, and assured of Sri Lanka’s serious support for Tehran’s initiative.

The diplomat pointed to the two states’ age-old and amicable relations, and called for further expansion of Iran-Sri Lanka economic ties, specially in grounds of power, energy and investment in different industrial sectors.
