Serbia hopes to join WTO in 2010

Serbia hopes to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) next year, the country’s economy ministry said.

Vesna Arsic, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economy, said it is realistic to expect that Serbia will join the WTO in 2010 if it completes the negotiations for admission into the organization by the end of this year. But, it not up to Serbia only, Arsic added.

Each of 153 WTO member-states could ask for opening the negotiations with Serbia to cut customs barriers.

Since the start of negotiations, 11 WTO members demanded opening negotiations with Serbia regarding customs protection of certain goods and services, Arsic said.

She cautioned that negotiations with Ukraine, which obstructed Montenegro’s entry into the WTO, could turn quite difficult.
