Rehn welcomes Croatia-Slovenia arbitration deal

EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn welcomed a signing of a border arbitration agreement between Croatia and Slovenia, calling on both countries to ratify the document as soon as possible.

“This is a good day for Croatia and Slovenia and for the European Union. I want to congratulate both countries and the EU’s Swedish presidency on this historic agreement”, Rehn said in a statement released by his office in Brussels.

“This is a most European way of peaceful settlement of disputes. I encourage both countries to proceed with ratification without unnecessary delay, and hope that Croatia makes the last mile in the negotiations, which are reaching the final stage”, the statement said.

Slovenia and Croatia signed a border arbitration agreement earlier today, paving the way for the two countries to clear up a nearly two-decade-old dispute that has held up Croatia’s European Union bid.
