Moldovan delegation calls PACE to send mission to Transnistria

The Moldovan delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has called upon the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg to delegate a mission to Moldova’s Transnistrian region so as to help the Moldovan authorities release journalist Ernest Vardanyan from custody in Tiraspol.

On Wednesday, the delegation issued an appeal to the European forum concerning the journalist’s arrest. The document authors wrote that the Moldovan Government is undertaking urgent measures to liberate the journalist, but the separatist region’s leaders would remain indifferent. They have accused Vardanyan of high treason, though the young man has never belonged to whatever official organization in Transnistria.

The Moldovan parliamentarians have appealed also to other national delegations to PACE, to the Parliamentary Assembly’s presidency and Bureau to draw the international attention to human right violation in Transnistria.
