Greek FM says that Serbia deserves to be given EU candidate status

Greek Foreign Minister Stavros Lambrinidis said on Wednesday in Belgrade that Serbia “deserves to be given EU candidate status”.

The Greek official also pledged his country’s support to that end.

Lambrinidis said at a joint news conference after a meeting with his Serbian counterpart Vuk Jeremić that the position of Greece on the Kosovo issue remained unchanged.

Greece does not recognize the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo, he said.

At the same time, Lambrinidis welcomed the dialogue between Belgrade and Priština, saying that it is the right path to take.

Speaking about bilateral relations, he said that ties between Serbia and Greece were strong and that there was potential to improve economic cooperation.
