EP rapporteur for Serbia says that Kosovo issue should be resolved first

European Parliament Rapporteur for Serbia, Jelko Kacin, said on Monday that along with EU candidate status, Serbia should also get a date for the beginning of negotiations.

He pointed out, however, that in order to make progress in the Euro-integration process, the country needed to resolve the issue of Kosovo.

According to him, during her recent visit to Serbia, German Chancellor Angela Merkel did not put new conditions before Serbia, but only explained the existing ones.

He commended the efforts of Serbian officials in seeking a lasting solution to the Kosovo issue through dialogue, and underlined that Belgrade had to explain to the Serb community in Kosovo that no one wanted them to leave Kosovo.
