Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso has praised the “courage” of the Greek public in tackling the country’s “demanding and challenging” crippling debts.
But, speaking in Brussels on Thursday, he also described the EU’s financial support for Athens as “unprecedented”.
His comments at a meeting of the Committee of the Regions (CoR) came after Greek politicians this week approved a bill on austerity measures needed for a new bailout.
The austerity measures have been demanded by the EU, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Central Bank (ECB) – the so-called Troika – as a condition for handing over a further loan.
