Serbia to start accession talks with EU soon

Brussels diplomats say Serbia will soon start accession talks with EU.

Jelko Kacin, the EU Parliament Rapporteur for Serbia, said that once Serbia gets the EU candidate status, there will be no new conditions for Serbia to start accession talks.

“I think that the EU will wait for the results of the elections in Serbia. We do not want [the date of accession talks] it to be part of the pre-election race,” Kacin said on Monday.

EU foreign ministers are scheduled to decide on Tuesday whether to grant Serbia EU candidate status. Their decision must then be approved by EU leaders at the beginning of March.
