Bulgaria and Romania must improve efforts to fight organized crime and corruption, the President of the European Commission Jose Manual Barroso, said on Wednesday.
Barroso said on Wednesday that Bulgaria had made some progress in terms of drafting new legislation, but this was unsatisfactory in itself and the new laws need to be implemented.
The Commission President spoke ahead of the release of a European Commission report on Bulgaria’s compliance with EU legal standards.
At the press conference, he also discussed Romania, adding that recent events in the country “called into question the government’s commitment to respect for the rule of law”.
