The military strongman who led last year’s military coup in Mali has been arrested and charged with kidnapping, in a bold turnaround for Mali’s civilian government which had previously shied away from confronting the powerful junta leader.
The country’s chief prosecutor, Daniel Tessougue, confirmed that Gen. Amadou Haya Sanogo had been taken into custody.
He indicated that further charges could be filed later, saying: “For the moment Sanogo has been inculpated for complicity in kidnapping. Other charges could be added later.”
