Kerry meets Syrian peace activists

imgSecretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday met with a delegation of prominent Syrian women human-rights and peace activists on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York, the State Department announced.

“He stressed the U.S. governmentآ’s strong support for Syrian civil society and human rights defenders, who, despite abhorrent daily violence and grave risks posed by ISIL, the Assad regime and extremist groups, work together to advocate for human rights, counter extremist influence, deliver critical humanitarian relief and develop common positions on their vision for a transition,” the announcement said.

Kerry was joined by Anne Patterson, Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs; Tom Malinowski, Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights & Labor; Daniel Rubinstein, U.S. Special Envoy for Syria; and Catherine M. Russell, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues.
