Egypt’s ousted president Mohamed Mursi was sentenced to death by a Cairo court on Tuesday for accusations of escaping from the Wadi al-Natroun prison.
The former president and 128 other defendants are accused of collaborating with international bodies, the Palestinian Hamas and Lebanese Hezbollah, to escape prison during the January 2011
uprising that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak.
Mursi was handed the death sentence, alongside several others including Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie, who has previously been handed two death sentences.
The judge presiding over the trial said the court is certain “beyond reasonable doubt” that this case involved defendants from inside and from outside the country, during the session which was aired live on state television.
He added that the defendants aimed to “create a state of chaos in the country.”
This case includes 27 defendants who were tried in session and 102 sentenced in absentia.
