Nairobi – The Kenyan army said it destroyed a base in Somalia run by Islamic extremists al Shabaab rebels and killed 15 of its fighters.
Kenya has been hit several times by al-Shabaab, which opposes the Kenyan military involvement in Somalia.
Kenyan military spokesman Colonel David Obonyo said in a statement Sunday that Kenyan troops under the African Union mission in Somalia destroyed al-Shabaab base in Yantooy by Jubba in southern Somalia in an attack on the dawn.
He said two rebel boats used to cross the river were also destroyed.
He added that Yantooy was the main base used by the rebels to cross the river from Jilib, an Al Shabaab base in the Lower Shabelle region, and infiltrate the Lower Jubba region near the border with Kenya .
