UN chief calls on leaders of South Sudan to restore confidence

New York – The UN chief says global aid appeal for the conflict-torn South Sudan is just three percent funded, and the world body publishes $ 21m in emergency funds to help.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spoke during a visit to the East African country, where he spoke with his chief of President Rebel urged to quickly establish a government of national unity
transition.
President Salva Kiir this month appointed rebel leader Riek Machar as vice president, but Machar has yet to return to South Sudan, citing security concerns.
Ban urged Kiir and Machar to “restore mutual confidence” and divert attention to the humanitarian and economic crisis in the country and “massive violations of human rights.”
More than two years of fighting has killed tens of thousands and displaced two million people.
