MOLDOVA
The recently elected new Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, Mihai Ghimpu, has stated on the Echo of Moscow radio this past weekend that the legislative forum shall not be promoting the idea of Moldova’s unification with Romania.
He explained, “If I say that I speak the Romanian language this does not yet mean I stand up for Moldova’s unification with Romania. Yes I am a unionist by my convictions, but I am also the chairman of a party that has its own program, which I must abide by”.
In his words, the unification problem should nowadays be tackled from another viewpoint: “Our political program envisages two main objectives – liquidation of poverty and European integration. But integration into the European Union presupposes preservation of the statehood of the Republic of Moldova”.
