Iran Positive about Cooperation with EU

TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- Chairman of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaoddin Boroujerdi said Iran holds a positive view about cooperation with Europe.

According to a report released by the Information and Media Department of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, Boroujerdi made the remarks in a meeting with the Vice Chairman of the Swedish parliament’s Foreign Policy Commission, Orban Ahlin, here on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Boroujerdi noted Iran’s positive look at cooperation with Europe, and pointing to the significant role that friendly meetings and conventions play in the consolidation of mutual ties, he described parliamentary exchanges as a new opportunity for development of relations and as a positive step towards exchange of views by Iran and Sweden in other fronts.

Terming the Persian Gulf as the most significant source of energy for the world, he pointed to the increasing sensitiveness of the region due to its close links with global economy, and further viewed safeguarding and strengthening of stability and tranquility in the Persian Gulf region as a necessary move that would assist in the establishment of international security.

Elsewhere, the Iranian MP referred to regional developments, including issues of Afghanistan, and expressed concern about the increased production of narcotics in that country, reminding that cultivation and production of illicit drugs in Afghanistan has doubled since the deployment of the US troops in there.

He also reminded Iran’s industrious efforts in the campaign against the devilish phenomenon of drug plantation and trafficking, and criticizing the western countries’ lack of cooperation with Iran in this regard, he stressed that a real and fundamental solution of the problem requires attention and effective measures by the international community.

Elsewhere, the lawmaker said that assisting the Lebanese in safeguarding national unity and restoring calm and participating in the reconstruction of that country set Iran’s foreign policy towards Lebanon, and stressed that sparking tensions and unrests does not serve the interests of any state, saying that the United States is pursuing a wrong policy in this regard.

For his part, Vice Chairman of the Swedish parliament’s Foreign Policy Commission, Orban Ahlin described the two countries’ age-old relations, and further voiced enthusiasm of Sweden’s parliament for exchanging views on different issues, forming friendship groups and enhancing relations with Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly.

He further viewed continued exchange of views as effective in removing misunderstandings, getting familiar with the realities existing in the other societies and reinvigorating cordial ties.

“A large number of the representatives of the Swedish parliament and I strongly support consolidation of relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he underscored.
