Serbia’s candidacy to be discussed Oct. 25

EU Foreign Affairs Council will discuss Serbia’s request for EU membership at the meeting in Luxembourg on October 25. This is according to Belgian Foreign Minister Steven Vanackere.

“I will put Serbia’s candidacy on the agenda,” stated Vanackere, whose country is currently holding the EU Presidency.

Vanackere and Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme are attending the 65th annual UN General Assembly in New York.

Serbian President Boris Tadićc, who is heading Serbia’s delegation in New York, met with Leterme on Wednesday to discuss Serbia’s EU integration process. Tadić will discuss the same issue with EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Catherine Ashton on Thursday.

The decision on forwarding Serbia’s request to the European Commission must be made unanimously by foreign ministers of all 27 EU member states.
