TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- An informed source in Iraq’s northern city of Erbil said that Iran’s Ambassador to Iraq will leave Baghdad for Erbil Saturday afternoon to pursue the case with the Iranian diplomats kidnapped by the US forces during a raid on the Iranian consulate general in Erbil.
The source told FNA that the envoy intends to discuss the case with the Kurd officials in an effort to set the diplomats free as soon as possible.
The source said that the US raid on the Iranian consulate general and kidnapping of the Iranian diplomats has fueled the anti-American atmosphere in the region.
He also stated that since Americans refrain from releasing the diplomats such a wave of hatred for the US has even increased in the region.
Iranian Ambassador to Iraq Kazemi Qomi announced earlier that the diplomats would be released soon.
At around 3 a.m. Thursday morning, US troops disarmed the guards outside the Iranian consulate general in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil, broke into the building and confiscated computers and documents there while military helicopters were hovering overhead.
Despite Americans’ allegations, the liaison office had diplomatic immunity and functioned as a consulate general issuing travel documents and carrying out other consular tasks. An Iranian flag flying over the building was hauled down during the raid.
