Turkish foreign ministry announced on May 18th that Turkey will seek a new term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. The country will target the 2015-2016 period, competing against Spain and New Zealand. According to the press release, the latest developments in the Middle East and the Mediterranean “have further increased Turkey’s responsibilities regarding international peace, stability and security”. Turkey held a Council seat in 2009-2010.
