Serbia wants a date to be set for EU initiation talks this year

Serbian President Boris Tadić stated late on Thursday in Belgrade that Serbia “should be ambitious when it comes to the process of the country’s European integration”. He made the statement following his meeting with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.

That is the reason why, in addition to being made EU candidate, Serbia “wants a date for initiation of talks to be set this year as well”, said Tadić.

“Serbia has the right to have high expectations, especially when it meets its obligations,” Tadić underscored, on the day of the arrest of Hague fugitive Ratko Mladić.

Ashton welcomed Mladić’s arrest and replying to the question as to whether Serbia would obtain EU candidate status by the end of the year, she underscored that, “politically speaking, this is an important day and that technical activities on Serbia’s European integration would continue”.
