EU hails end of political deadlock in Albania

The EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule on Thursday welcomed the apparent end of a two-year political stalemate in Albania, after parliament approved two laws that required cross-party consensus. 

“These developments, together with the resumption of full parliamentary work in September… are expected to mark the end of the political stalemate,” Fule said.

“I strongly encourage the ruling majority [under Sali Berisha] and opposition [Socialists under Edi Rama] to build on these positive developments, fully restoring and sustaining a constructive political dialogue,” he added.

The warm words of welcome came as Albania’s parliament on Thursday also approved the creation of parliamentary commission for electoral reform.
