Albania’s parliament will start the procedure for the election of a new head of state on Thursday.
Candidates must have the backing of 20 MPs in order to be eligible. The assembly vote is by secret ballot and there can be up to five rounds of voting.
In the first three rounds, two-thirds of the votes in parliament are required to approve a candidate; in the fourth and fifth round a new head of state can be selected by a simple majority of 71 votes in the 140-seat assembly.
