People gather in Bulgarian capital to hold protest

Over 50 people have gathered for tonight’s protest in the Bulgarian capital Sofia in Orlov Most (Eagles’ Bridge) crossroads.

They have lit candles, brought flowers and photos of 36-year-old Plamen Goranov, who self-immolated in front of the building of the municipality of Varna in February and died at hospital last night. They observed a minute’s silence and read out a prayer in memory of the man. There is a banner reading “Mafia kills Bulgaria.”

There is stepped-up police presence.
