UN, Syrian officials discuss chemical weapons destruction

Faisal Meqdad, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister, and Sigrid Kaag, head of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons-UN (OPCW-UN) joint mission on eliminating Syria’s chemical weapons program, discussed issues related to Syrian chemical weapons.

Discussions focused on the latest developments and progress made in light of Syrian commitments to eliminating chemical weapons after it joined the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, said a statement by Syrian Foreign Ministry.

Meqdad reiterated that eliminating chemical weapons was achieved due to seriousness and responsibility of Syrian government toward this issue upon the instructions of President Bashar Al-Assad.

He pointed out that fruitful cooperation with Syria and the OPCW-UN led to that achievement.

For her part, Kaag expressed her happiness for this move, praising Syrian cooperation, which led to the success of the mission, which ends its work in the country on September 30.
