United States creates global coalition to counter ISIL

US Secretary of State John Kerry announced a new Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) that will be served by military expert General John Allen.

“General Allen will help build and sustain the coalition so it can operate across multiple lines of effort in order to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL,” said Kerry in a statement.

Most recently Allen and Kerry worked on security needs for Israel. Previously, he was a top commander for NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.

Allen’s team will include Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Brett McGurk, who will serve as General Allenآ’s deputy senior envoy with the rank of Ambassador.

“I could not be more pleased than to have General Allen coming on board now fulltime at the State Department,” Kerry reiterated.
