Egypt FM in Addis Ababa to attend AU talks on Libya conflict

Egypt’s foreign affairs minister Sameh Shoukry headed on Monday to Addis Ababa to attend an African Union (AU) meeting on behalf of the president on the current situation in Libya, a ministry statement read.
The meeting will include officials from Libya, Congo, Uganda, Egypt, Sudan, Chad, Algeria, Niger and Tunisia, along with members of the High Level Ad Hoc Committee on Libya; South Africa, Ethiopia, Gabon and Mauritania.
“Egyptian participation aims to present the Egyptian vision on dealing with the situation in Libya and emphasising the centrality of the Sikhrat agreement,” the statement read.
Last year, a political agreement was reached in Morocco’s Sikhrat City that mandated the reaching of a peaceful transition of power in Libya and the establishing of a national unity government. However, the UN-brokered peace process in Libya has stalled.
Libya currently has two parliaments and two rival governments, effectively dividing the country into east and west.
The parliament and interim government in the eastern part of the country are refusing to endorse the UN-backed administration in Tripoli in the west, which is a prerequisite for the Tripoli camp to officially hold power.
