Iran restarted to pump natural gas to Turkey on Thursday following a large explosion on Sunday night on a pipeline bringing gas from Iran to Turkey. Gas flow was halted when the pipeline was damaged in the blast that occurred 17 kilometers inside Turkey and caused a huge fire. Turkey had expected to resume the flow of gas from Iran – its second biggest supplier after Russia – on Tuesday.
Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Ministry sources said that Iran has started to pump natural gas early on Thursday after the pipeline was repaired. It is said 20 million cubic meters of gas would flow through the pipeline today.
Turkey had been getting extra gas from Russia to offset the shortfall. The reason for the explosion was not announced. Sabotage is common on pipelines leading into Turkey from Iran and Iraq, where Kurdish militants are based.
