Iran: UN Needs Restructuring

A009056831.jpgIran says the UN needs to undergo major reform, adding that the developments in the past 60 years require the United Nations to make changes.“The world has changed a lot in the last sixty years; new issues have been introduced, and major developments have been made. Therefore, the United Nations needs to restructure if it is to play a significant role in the world today,” Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told UN General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim Wednesday.

Mottaki also touched on the issue of terrorism and said that a double standard towards terrorism should not be adopted because it will only harm the global community.

Mottaki stressed the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly opposes war. “We witness the disastrous consequences of war every day in Iraq, Lebanon and Afghanistan.”

The UN General Assembly president, for his part, condemned go-to-war policies and stressed exercising patience in order to restore peace and balance to the world.

Srgjan Kerim added Millennium Development Goals, counter-terrorism policies and climate change are the UN’s top priorities, which require global cooperation.
