Iran Considers Binding Persian Gulf to Caspian Sea

TEHRAN – Iran is studying a plan to connect the Caspian Sea to the Persian Gulf, Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia-Pacific Affairs Mehdi Safari said.

Asked about Iran’s position on a proposal by Russia for connecting the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea, Safari told the Mehr News Agency that the Russians have already connected the two seas through Volga canal, however its capacity is limited.

At a summit of the Caspian Sea littoral states in Tehran on October 16 the Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed building a new water routes between the Caspian and the Black seas.

The Islamic Republic approves of Russia’s plan, and is also studying a plan for connecting its northern and southern seas through a channel, Safari stated.
