Mottaki slams West’s religious discrimination

Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki has criticized discrimination against Muslim minorities in Western countries.

The UN High Commission for Human Rights should speak for the entire international community and should represent the variety of the international system, Mottaki told UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour in Geneva on the sidelines of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament on Wednesday.

The foreign minister urged the UN High Commission for Human Rights to utilize local potentials in efforts to protect human rights.

The UN High Commission’s new structure is facing a serious challenge in revising previous wrong strategies and avoiding double standards in dealing with human rights issues, Mottaki stated.

He expressed regret over the blatant violation of human rights in Gaza and the disastrous situation of Palestinian civilians.

The foreign minister also criticized certain Western countries’ desecration of religious figures under the pretext of the freedom of speech. “These approaches run counter to morality and religious values respected by human society,” Mottaki insisted.
