TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki described the recent US raid on Syria as an obvious manifestation of Washington’s desperation rather than a show of might.
“The stance taken by the Islamic Republic of Iran about the attack is an upright one and we immediately denounced the deadly assault. President Ahmadinejad slammed the raid in a telephone call with the Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad,” the Iranian Foreign Minister told reporters in Damascus on Monday.
In a telephone conversation with Syrian President Assad last Friday, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had stated that the US committed another blunder when it carried out the senseless and savage act against Syria.
Mottaki was also quoted by press tv as saying that Iran blasts such an “act of aggression” and considers the move as a sign of US despair rather than a display of power to intimidate Syria.
The Iranian minister told reporters that his visit to Syria was a sign of solidarity with the Syrian nation in the face of the US attack.
Last Sunday, US commandoes in four helicopters attacked the Syrian village of al-Sukkariya) some eight kilometers from the Iraqi border at about 5:45 pm local time (1445 GMT). The assault took nine civilian lives and inflicted injuries upon 14 others.
Officials in Damascus aimed indignant remarks at Washington after the incident with the Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem saying, “We consider this a criminal and terrorist aggression.”
Mottaki arrived in Damascus on Monday afternoon and after meeting with President Bashar al-Assad and Vice-President Farouq al-Shara and the Parliament speaker will depart for Tehran this evening.
